For Spoon Carving we can use different types of wood but they are generally light colored woods. Although there are naturally dark woods like Black Walnut. In this article you will learn how to Ebonize<\/g> or naturally darken the wood.<\/p>\n\n

The first method of Ebonizing consists of using Iron Acetate that reacts with the tannins of the wood to produce a dark tone. The more tannins the wood has, the darker the result will be.<\/p>\n\n

Some species used in Spoon Carving and rich in tannins are: Cherry, Beech, Chestnut, Mahogany.<\/p>\n\n

Oak is the wood with the highest tannin content but it is not recommended for Spoon Carving as it is very hard and fibrous.<\/p>\n\n

It is possible to add tannins to any wood by applying a Tannic Acid solution. A homemade option is to use Black Tea which is high in tannins.<\/p>\n\n

How to make Iron Acetate to stain wood?<\/h2>\n\n

Iron Acetate or Ferrous Acetate is the mix between Acetic Acid: VINEGAR<\/g> and Ferric Oxide that we obtain from STEEL WOOL<\/g>.<\/p>\n\n

To obtain the solution, we must soak some steel wool or steel shavings in white vinegar for at least 3 days, in a glass jar with a perforated lid to allow gas to escape (IMPORTANT!).<\/p>\n\n

Using a coffee filter, we can strain the liquid to remove all solids before applying it.<\/p>\n\n
